Hygiene related to makeup tools

Hi everyone, welcome to my blog!

Hygiene should be a primary issue for makeup artists, as we work on a living canvas we must be careful in the management of our tools. Some time ago I wrote a post on how to clean makeup brushes but -either for personal or professional use- is a must to know how to keep your products germ-free, so keep reading and hopefully learn a little bit more about the hygiene related to makeup tools.

Cleaning brushes

A dirty brush involves the presence of germs that can harm the health of your skin, so it’s recommended to do a deep clean at least every 15 days (or weekly depending on usage)... If you want to know some tricks to keep the brushes clean read the post "How to clean makeup brushes"

For the hygiene of the brushes you should consider if they are for personal or professional use, but in both cases it’s important to take into account:

  • Do a deep clean every week or 15 days.
  • Keep them stored in a dry and dust-free place.
  • Sanitize brushes between customers with a fast drying product.
  • Avoid using brushes that have product buildup.

Use of products

The way we handle the products can also ensure its hygiene, so these points are relevant:

Use a metallic or acrylic palette to mix products, this is more hygienic than using the back of your hand; because although your hand is clean (and easier to use) your skin reacts when you place a product on it and you don’t know how this interaction can influence the skin of your customers.

If you're using cream products don’t take them out directly from the container with the brush, instead use a spatula and place it on a palette. This will prevent the introduction of germs, which is what can happen if you take it out directly with the brush. The same applies for pigments, loose powders and lipsticks.

It is ideal to use disposable eyelash brushes for maintaining the hygiene of the mascara and simultaneously protect the eye’s health of your customers. Also, if it’s possible use disposable lipstick applicators.

Under no circumstances you should lend out your makeup.

Disinfecting Products

A good idea is to carry alcohol (in a spray bottle) and paper towels. To use it you just have to spray some alcohol and wait a few seconds to evaporate; this will help to disinfect some products such as:

  • Compact shadows.
  • Cream products.
  • Brushes (do it a few minutes before using).
  • Lipsticks and/or eye pencils.
  • Acrylic or metal palettes.
  • Work surfaces.
