Hello everyone!
Today the media is full of
images of beautiful makeup looks that many women want to wear on their faces...
images of bright colors and flawless skin that all of us desire, but, how is
the indiscriminate use of Photoshop the culprit for how many women have false
expectations about makeup?

Photoshop use in makeup
It’s not a secret to anyone
the excessive use of Photoshop in advertising, where perfect bodies and
unrealistic skins are presented as "normal" creating anguish in those
who can not achieve these ideals of beauty.

In magazines we see
"perfect women" and we all pursue that ideal image. But not only
that, because the use of filters in our selfies also create an erroneous
impression about what makeup looks like in real life.

False expectations about makeup
Makeup advertisements show
“the ideal shape” of eyes and lips and skins without any imperfection. This
suggests that we as makeup artists have the responsibility to make our clients
look the same way as the publicity photos, and that’s why some people have an
unrealistic view of makeup.
Although you can recreate any
style of makeup, it’s important that people who use our services know in
advance why they will not look like the photo of the celebrity or model, and in
this way avoid any disappointment and/or tantrum because they think that we
didn’t give a good service.

What should be considered...
- Each face is different and according to that, the makeup is recommended. It's okay to seek for inspiration in photos, but is also good to trust that your makeup artist will give you good advice about how to stand out the best of your face.
- As a makeup artist you should be able to guide each person according to their particular needs.
- All skins have texture -some more than others- so it’s not healthy to pretend that you can get a perfectly smooth skin only with makeup; although makeup artists can use certain techniques to improve the appearance of the skin, the daily care that you give to your face is fundamental.
- If you like a certain style of makeup it’s ok that you want to recreate it, but the best is not to seek to be the copy of anyone else (even less if it comes from advertising) but rather to adapt that makeup to your particular characteristics.
- Everyone is his own worst critic (I know it first hand), but learning to love and to know your face helps you know what style of makeup suits you better, the key is to accept what favors you.
I’m not condemning the use of
Photoshop (as it is used in all areas of advertising) but I want to generate
some awareness about it. The results that can be expected in real life are
different from those shown in advertising; and you should keep in mind that
celebrities and models are not perfect beings, so to be in front of the public
eye they are helped by countless professionals (hair stylist, makeup artist,
assistants, consultants, etc.).
What do you think about false
expectations about makeup? As a makeup artist: have you experienced this kind
of situation?
