Does a makeup artist need a niche market?

Something I heard recently when looking for tips for makeup artists is that necessarily you must define a niche market, moreover, they advised to be as specific as possible and focus only on that segment of the population… but does a makeup artist really need a niche market?

This issue causes me some concern, because on one hand I think I will be blocking my creativity if I direct my efforts to a single type of clients; but in the other hand I think it makes some sense be known directly as a "specialist" in a particular area of makeup.

For example, brides are always looking for makeup artists and I completely agree that any professional just want to make only that kind of work because it’s their passion (and it’s a great niche market)... but what happens if besides of bride makeup I also like doing makeup for fashion, bodypaint, advertising or sfx? Couldn't a makeup artist be able to work in all these areas and provide an excellent service at all? (which leads to obtain jobs in those areas).

Where is the role of versatility? While there are makeup artists who like to do something specific (social, artistic, sfx), there are also artists –me included- who like to explore and work in various areas of makeup; although I admit that sometimes it becomes difficult to promote myself or get people knowing exactly what kind of makeup work I can do.

I know some people think that anyone can’t be good at everything -and there is some truth in it- but remember that as makeup artists we learn a lot of techniques that allow us to venture into most areas of the makeup, and that is obviously on the tastes of each one to direct their efforts to a single or several areas of makeup.

What do you do to publicize all your facets as a makeup artist? Do you think it’s necessary to create a niche market and devote yourself exclusively to it? Or do you think you can be inserted into various areas of the makeup at the same time?

Thanks for reading, you are welcome to like and share with your friends!
